Please give us a brief introduction about yourself before diving into details
My name is Loubna El Ouaourti from Morocco. I am currently a PhD researcher in theoretical nuclear physics at the Faculty of Sciences Semlalia, Cadi Ayyad University, in Marrakech, Morocco. My work focuses on collective models that describe nuclear structure and shape coexistence phenomena. I am passionate about exploring how simple mathematical models can capture complex behaviors in atomic nuclei and advance our understanding of nuclear theory.

Theoretical nuclear physics provides the fundamental framework for understanding the atomic nucleus, which plays a crucial role in the generation of energy in the universe, and is essential for advancing scientific knowledge and long-term technological development.

My work involves constructing and solving collective Hamiltonians that include different nuclear shape deformations to predict energy levels of nuclei in various regions of the nuclear chart. In addition to energy spectra, I study electromagnetic transition probabilities between nuclear states, which allow direct comparison with experimental data. My research aims to identify the main mechanisms that govern nuclear structure by comparing theoretical results with measured spectra and transition rates

How did you get interested in the world of theoretical nuclear physics and atomic behaviour?
I was born in Ouarzazate, a small city in southern Morocco. My academic journey began in a private primary school. As a child, I found motivation in academic excellence, not only for personal fulfilment, but also for the sense of validation it brought from my parents. That encouragement planted an early belief in striving for the best.

I later transitioned to public middle and high schools, which marked a shift. The environment was unfamiliar at the beginning. I graduated from high school with honours, but did not receive enough guidance at the time to help me fully take advantage of the opportunities I had. It did not matter that my achievement should have opened doors to higher education in Morocco.

At age 17, I moved to Marrakech to study at the Faculty of Sciences. Leaving my small hometown for a large city was challenging, particularly as I navigated independence, distractions, and the emotional weight of adjustment.

During my undergraduate years, I went through a deeply challenging period marked by depression, isolation, and emotional exhaustion. Living far from my family and sharing space with roommates from different backgrounds intensified the sense of displacement. At times, I withdrew from university altogether, unconsciously. I now understand that that was my mind rejecting an environment that felt misaligned with my sense of self and potential.

Stepping away from my studies was especially painful because, since childhood, learning had been central to my identity. So distancing myself from it felt like losing a part of who I was. Missed exams, academic setbacks, and discouraging words from people around me compounded this struggle. Looking back, this period taught me a powerful lesson: the importance of being surrounded by the right people, or, at times, the courage to walk alone rather than remain in an environment that diminishes you.

Despite these setbacks, I graduated at the top of my class with a Bachelor’s degree in Fundamental Physics in 2020. Later that year, I enrolled in a Master’s program in High Energy Physics and Astrophysics, completing it successfully in 2022. That same year, I began a PhD in Theoretical Nuclear Physics, focusing on the structure of deformed nuclei through collective models.

You have pointed out a little bit about the challenges you have faced while finding your footing in nuclear physics. Would you like to share more details on that?
As you can tell, my doctoral journey has been far from linear. While my first year brought research progress and my first scientific publication, financial challenges soon followed. Without access to a higher education scholarship, I took on work outside my research as a coffee maker in Marrakech. My relationship with my parents was strained during this period. I was like a hunter going out alone.

By my third PhD year, stress began to take a visible toll on my health, prompting me to pause my studies. During this time, I returned to Ouarzazate and worked as a waitress in a restaurant, as I could not find any well-paid teaching opportunities. This experience was challenging, but it taught me the importance of perseverance even when circumstances force you to take a different path.

In April 2025, I experienced a turning point when I reconnected with my loved ones. I eventually decided to resume my PhD and moved back to Marrakech. Today, I am once again immersed in research, participating in conferences, teaching practical classes, and gradually rediscovering my motivation and sense of purpose.

My journey in STEM has not been defined by uninterrupted progress. It is a product of resilience, self-reflection, and the courage to return to what I know I am meant to do.

This is a true definition of resilience. It would have been easier for you to walk away, but you returned. We are proud of you!
Thank you! Despite the slow progress and the successive challenges, there has always been an inner voice, a steadfast belief in my ability to overcome and succeed.

What has been the most rewarding thing/time during your journey in theoretical nuclear physics?
I am still at the beginning of my research career, and I am making good progress. For me, the real impact lies in helping others, offering support, or a word that can make a difference in someone’s difficult moments.

Who are you outside of the walls of theoretical nuclear physics and atomic behaviour?
Outside of my professional work, I am an emotional person who appreciates simplicity paired with elegance in all aspects. I enjoy meaningful connections, and I am drawn to environments where people treat one another with genuine respect, without judgment based on social or professional status. For me, true wealth is found not in material success, but in people and relationships.

What is your favorite quote?
“La vie n’est qu’une succession de renaissances” ~ Simone de Beauvoir. This is simply translated as “Life is nothing but a succession of rebirths.” I like this quote because I feel like my journey has been like that of a phoenix, reborn from nothing. We are reborn after failure, after betrayal, after illness, after disappointment. It never truly ends until our last moment. We will all face challenges, but we can turn them into fuel that drives us forward. They can become a determination that helps us keep moving ahead.

Another quote is “Ce que Dieu m’a donné, Dieu seul peut me l’enlever” ~ Hassan II. This one translates to “What God has given me, only God can take away.” Along my journey, I have met many obstacles but God has been my guide. This has proved that the ultimate source of strength and support is God alone. Not people in power, not circumstances, only God.

What is your word of encouragement for a young girl who is interested in learning more bout atomic behavior or theoretical nuclear physics in general?
You must build the mindset of a warrior. When life becomes tough, survive through difficult moments, be patient, and trust in the power of God. Don’t stop until you are in the right place, surrounded by the right people who value and recognize your potential. Remember that all your efforts count, even when it seems like nothing is changing. These moments teach patience, and the right time will come.
