Women In Data Science – Dr. Belle Fille Murorunkwere

In a world increasingly driven by data, Belle Fille, a Senior Data Scientist, is helping to redefine what it means to be one of Africa’s leading voices shaping the continent’s digital transformation. Her journey reflects the growing presence and influence of African women in technology, using data not just to predict the future, but to build it;

Hi, Belle Fille! You are welcome to this episode of Words That Count. Thank you for joining us
I am happy to be here. Thank you for having me.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do
My name is Dr. Belle Fille Murorunkwere from Rwanda. I am currently a Senior Data Scientist at Cenfri Rwanda.

Briefly walk us through your journey of becoming a data scientist
I was raised by my father after losing my mother when I was about 10 years old. My father was my greatest source of motivation. He used to tell me, “I will sell everything I have for you to study,” and he encouraged me to pursue the highest level of education possible. From an early age, he inspired me to love mathematics, telling me that it was the foundation of everything.

After completing my Ordinary Level, I was oriented toward Mathematics and Physics, which later changed to Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM). I was later admitted to university to study Applied Mathematics (Statistics option), which I completed successfully.

Before starting university, my father often reminded me that mathematics would have value and impact if I pursued higher degrees. Unfortunately, he passed away before I completed my bachelor’s degree, but his words stayed with me.

After my bachelor’s, I learned about the AIMS Master’s program in Mathematical Sciences through my university colleagues and successfully applied. During my master’s studies, I developed a strong interest in data science, which also aligned with my professional goals.

After completing the master’s degree, I got my first formal job, but I did not stop there. I kept searching for further opportunities in data science. A few months later, the African Centre of Excellence in Data Science (ACEDS) at the University of Rwanda admitted me into the PhD in Data Science program, where I focused on applying machine learning techniques to detect fraud. It was a long and demanding journey of six years, but completing my PhD remains one of my proudest achievements and led me to my current position.

What have been some of the most pressing challenges on this path to becoming a data scientist?
When I started my master’s program, it was very intense! It required learning new skills, such as programming, which was used extensively throughout the program. Since it was my first exposure to coding, I had to dedicate many extra hours to reach the level of my peers.

At the same time, I was a new mother, which made it even more challenging to balance studies and family responsibilities. I had many sleepless nights, but I kept pushing forward.

During my PhD, I also gave birth in my first year. Managing a full-time job, research, and caring for a baby was extremely demanding. I used to go to school after work for about two hours every day, and I spent weekends fully dedicated to my research.

These experiences taught me resilience, discipline, and how to find strength even when life felt overwhelming.

How were you able to push forward in the midst of these challenges?
My greatest inspiration has come from my family’s unending support. My husband has been incredibly supportive throughout the journey, always reminding me that I am capable and taking care of the children whenever I needed to focus on research.

I also carry my father’s words with me. He used to say that “nothing comes for free”. These words have stayed with me, reminding me that success requires effort and perseverance. I have always believed that every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and that mindset has kept me moving forward.

There were countless moments when I felt like giving up on my PhD, but the trust and support I received and the reminder of my dream gave me the strength to rise and continue.

Tell us about some of your most prestigious moments on this journey to becoming a senior data scientist
Completing my PhD in Data Science after six years of intense work and sleepless nights is one of the greatest achievements of my life.

I have also received two research prizes after winning institutional research competitions at my previous place of employment

Additionally, I have had the privilege of supporting several tax administrations, including Uganda, Indonesia, and Comoros, in analyzing their data and applying machine learning models to detect and predict tax fraud. Seeing how data-driven insights can improve governance and revenue collection has been deeply rewarding.

Who are you outside of your senior data scientist responsibilities?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family. I also enjoy praying, singing, and meeting friends to share laughter and good moments. These activities help me stay grounded and balanced.

What is your favorite quote?
I currently have two favourite quotes;

  1. There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish” ~ Michelle Obama.

  2. No dream is too high when you are willing to work, sacrifice, and keep faith in yourself” ~ Anonymous.

What is your word of encouragement for a young girl who is interested in becoming a data scientist?
Dear young girls, never let obstacles stop you from achieving your dreams. You are capable, strong, and intelligent. Stay committed, keep learning, and believe in yourself because you can do anything.

Thank you, Belle Fille, for sharing your journey with us. Your story reminds us that data is more than numbers! It is rather a language that can tell Africa’s stories, shape policies, and drive innovation. As a senior data scientist, may you continue to open doors for young women who aspire to turn curiosity into impact.
