Advancing Public Health Through Mathematical Epidemiology – Aijuka Loyde

Meet Loyde, a rising African scholar in Mathematical Epidemiology. She uses data-driven models to better understand and predict disease dynamics. Through her work, she is contributing to evidence-based solutions that can shape stronger, more responsive health systems across the continent.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my STEM journey and contribute to this initiative.

Please introduce yourself to our audience
My name is Aijuka Loyde from Uganda, currently living in Rwanda. I am a Master’s student at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Rwanda, pursuing a Master’s of Mathematical Science – Mathematical Epidemiology stream. My academic focus is on understanding how mathematical tools can be applied to analyze and predict disease dynamics. I am working towards developing models that can inform health policies and support public health decision-making.

How did you join this field of mathematical epidemiology?
When I was growing up, I aspired to be a role model, mentor, and inspiration, especially as a mathematician. I recognized that I was naturally gifted with numbers and wanted others to benefit from my knowledge. Watching my mother work as a teacher and seeing the gratitude of her students for the way she transformed their lives deeply inspired me. That environment strongly fueled my passion for STEM fields.

From a young age, I dedicated myself to mathematics. In primary school, I worked hard and was often recognized with prizes and awards. To me, playing with numbers was not just learning; it was fun. As I transitioned to secondary school, my passion for science grew even stronger, nurtured by supportive teachers who encouraged me.

I vividly remember one moment that deepened my interest. There was a time when the entire school had no water. When water tap drillers arrived, I watched them apply mathematics to estimate depth and determine where to drill a tap. Seeing how theory could solve real-life problems was inspiring and motivating. I realized then that knowledge is powerful when applied to practical challenges.

At Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), I explored mathematics more deeply and began to see how it underpins so many different fields. Yet, pure mathematics alone did not fully satisfy my curiosity. I wanted to understand how to apply this knowledge to real-world problems. This drive led me to focus on mathematical modeling and epidemiology, equipping myself with practical skills to solve problems and contribute to making the world a better place.

After my undergraduate studies, I began teaching mathematics and physics, and this is when I truly felt at home. Seeing how my students engaged with mathematics, sending little notes to tell me how I inspired them, and wanting to be like me, brought me immense joy. Their excitement and encouragement reminded me of my own childhood dream. I wanted to become a role model and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others who feel that they could not make it. That is how I gradually built the skills and confidence that led me to where I am today. I am still standing strong, focused on seeing it happen.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along your journey into mathematical epidemiology?
One of the challenges I faced was the gender imbalance during my school years, particularly in secondary school. There were very few girls in my classes. This often put us at a disadvantage, as some boys doubted our capabilities and treated us as less capable.

Financial constraints were another significant challenge. My family struggled to afford school fees at times, especially with many siblings and cousins for whom my father was responsible. However, through hard work and determination, I earned school bursaries that supported me through secondary school. When it came to university, my parents had to make sacrifices. They took loans and stretched resources to ensure I could continue my education.

A lack of mentorship posed another hurdle. There was no one to guide me enough toward my dreams or help me navigate my career path. It was intrinsic motivation that kept me pushing.

Finally, the curriculum I studied did not provide early hands-on experience, leaving me with limited practical skills until I entered the workforce. Even during my teaching career, I faced challenges, particularly when working with students with special educational needs, including those who were visually impaired. Delivering content in a practical and accessible way was difficult, as resources and support for specialized teaching were limited.

How have you been able to overcome these challenges?
I am inspired by the desire to help other people, to see them grow, and to live a happy life. My mother, a dedicated teacher, showed me how one person can transform lives, and my students continue to motivate me.

Another source of motivation is the fact that there are few female scientists, yet the world revolves around science. This encourages me every day to make my contribution to solving real-world problems and empowering others.

Tell us about some of the most prestigious moments as you establish your career in mathematical epidemiology
My current biggest achievement is winning a Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to pursue my master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences at AIMS Rwanda. I was also very proud of myself for graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education – Physical (Physics and Mathematics) from MUST.

I have also taken on some leadership roles along the way, including: 

  • Assistant Patron of the School STEM Club.

  • Class Representative at the university for two years.

  • Deputy Sports Faculty Minister at the university.

Lastly, I have some speaking engagements to enable me to improve my public speaking skills as a female scientist. For example, I have delivered lessons and talks to inspire girls in STEM and education in my classes and other school activities, like career day.

Who is Loyde outside of the mathematical epidemiology roles?
I am naturally curious and enjoy exploring new ideas. Most of the time, I find myself asking, “Why this and not that?” I love connecting with people and building friendships. In my free time, I enjoy watching movies, playing and following soccer (football), and doing exercises like road walks. I am also passionate about volunteering or giving back to my community whenever I can. It makes me the happiest person whenever I help someone in need.

What are your words of encouragement for a young girl interested in mathematical epidemiology?
If you have a goal, you pursue it, and you keep focused until the end. Don’t wait to be ready; start early, and grow through experience. Reflect on your future goals and how you can contribute to this world in your own capacity. The world needs your ideas and your voice. Ask questions and seek guidance.
